As the only armoured vehicle conference dedicated to the area of survivability, the 2021 event will gather programme managers, capability directors, commanders from the military, senior engineers, chief scientists and platform managers from leading solution providers to discuss what nations are doing to protect their armoured vehicles and personnel.

The two-day conference will aim to further address all layers of the survivability spectrum including:

Unlike any other event, the survivability conference is a meeting for the international armoured vehicle community designed around a series of focused discussions on the strategies and technologies being adopted to enhance crew and platform survivability. As seen in recent operations, threats to the vehicle are increasing in both scope and size. Traditional lightly armed combatants now have access to an increasing array of lethal anti-armour capabilities. With the continued proliferation of advanced anti-tank weaponry around the world, and as armed forces pivot to addressing near-peer adversaries, armored vehicle survivability remains as important as it ever has been.

This conference is a focused study on how to enhance survivability and addresses all layers of the survivability spectrum. Key capabilities that will be covered are signature management, situational awareness, armoured and blast protection, C-IED, vehicle obscuration systems, and an overall picture of integrated survivability.

    Brigadier (ret'd) Ian Cameron-Mowat

    Brigadier (Ret'd) Ian Cameron-Mowat works as an independent consultant in vehicle systems, electronic countermeasures, surveillance and counter-terrorism technology; he is also a founding director of CSB Defence, a consultancy company operating across a number of technology sectors in defence and security. In both roles, he helps companies to find opportunities and win business. He has spoken at or chaired conferences on vehicle survivability and situational awareness, robotics and autonomous systems, counter-drone and counter-IED.

    Ian went into officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1983. As a Russian graduate, he had a busy Cold War. After that unexpected success, he alternated between mainstream Royal Signals appointments and posts in equipment capability, security and counter-terrorism in the UK and with the United Nations. Highlights of his earlier career including waking up on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall the morning after it came down, and spending his birthday with his Regiment up to his chest in the cold, muddy River Ouse when it flooded York in 2000.

    His final seven years in uniform were spent, first as a colonel and finally as a brigadier, heading Special Projects and Force Protection teams in the UK MOD’s procurement organization, Defence Equipment and Support. Among other areas he was responsible for the UK’s counter-IED systems, force protection surveillance and active protection systems for armoured vehicles.

    Outside work, his interests are fairly standard – travel, languages, military history, archaeology, dogs, shouting at the television, all that sort of thing.

    After Commissioning into The Fusiliers in 1995, Brigadier Jon deployed as a Platoon Commander to Bosnia and Northern Ireland. After further time in the Province as a company operations officer, he moved to 2RRF as an armoured infantry company second in command. This was followed by two memorable years as an instructor at the RMA Sandhurst.

    On returning to 1RRF he completed tours as the Operations Officer and officer commanding the Recce Group in 2002, deploying in that role for Op TELIC 1. Moving from one desert to another, this was followed by a year as the British exchange officer at the US Army National Training Centre in California. He was awarded the US Meritorious Service Medal in 2004. 

    In 2006 he was posted to Afghanistan to command A Company 2RRF on Op HERRICK 4; he was Mentioned in Despatches in 2007. Company command was followed by two appointments in capability development in the MOD, including as MA to Director Battlespace Manoeuvre and SO2 Protected Mobility.

    On promotion, he deployed as Commander BASTION Training Centre. Subsequent command of 1RRF included Op OLYMPICS and Op HERRICK 18 in 2013, deploying as Transition Support Unit Nahr-e Saraj for which he was awarded the OBE. In 2014 he returned to capability development, first as the senior requirements manager for armoured vehicles in the DE&S and then as the Assistant Head for Capability Plans in Army HQ. He commanded 38 (Irish) Brigade from 2017-2019 and was appointed Head of Ground Manoeuvre capability in Army HQ in October 2019. In September 2020, he was appointed Colonel of the Regiment of The Fusiliers.

    Dr Martin Hagström

    Dr Martin Hagström

    Martin Hagström is a Deputy Research Director at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). Martin is the programme manager of the Weapons and protection area and responsible for the support to the Swedish Armed Forces’ weapons and protection research planning. He has served in several different positions at FOI and participated in a number of national and international research projects. Martin has a background in systems and control and his latest research includes work on regulation and legal aspects of autonomous weapon systems.

    Lieutenant Colonel James de St John-Pryce commissioned into the Blues and Royals with a passion for reconnaissance, he served in the Household Cavalry Regiment before stints in training, at mounted duty and in media operations; also as the Operations Officer for the Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Iraq.
    After Staff College, he served in the Permanent Joint Headquarters J3 (Operations) before commanding C Squadron HCR. He has also worked in Military Strategic Effects, for the European Training Mission in Mogadishu and on the AJAX programme. More recently he has been in the Joint Force Headquarters.
    Foremost are his passion for flying (fixed winged aircraft), skiing (generally with a small parachute - speed riding) and reforming the Army's least useful anachronisms.
    He assumed command of the Armoured Trials and Development Unit in August 2021.

    OTL Boenke, Karlheinz was born on the 7th of July 1963 in MUENCHEN, Bavaria, Germany.
    In 1984 enlisted in the German Army and started his military career in the Maintenance Corps. OTL Boenke attended the officer training from 1986 -1987 in ULM and HANNOVER. After having completed his engineering studies at the University of the Bundeswehr he served as a firing safety officer at the main training area GRAFENWOEHR from 1991 till 1992.
    Further on, amongst other posts, he served as logistics expert in the Army Material Office in BAD NEUENAHR, as a technical officer the Infantry Battalion 322 and as a commander of a training unit at the Technical School in AACHEN.
    He was deployed in the SFOR mission in 1998 as the technical officer of the Field Hospital RAJLOVC (BIH) and in 2006 in the HQ KFOR (KOS) as deputy JOC director.
    Since 2012 OTL Boenke is assigned to the Army Concepts and Capabilities Development
    Centre in KOELN as the authorized army representative for the MRAV BOXER.

    Lieutenant-Colonel Luís Carlos Gonçalves Rodrigues is a 48-year-old Portuguese Army officer, born in Chaves, in the North of Portugal.
    He began his studies in his hometown until the 12th grade. At the age of eighteen, he finished graduated highschool and entered the Military Academy, concluding his degree in Military Sciences - Infantry, in 1998. In addition to his Academy degree, in 2010, he did a Post-Graduation in ‘Tecnologias da comunicação e informação” from the Universidade de Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro, and in
    2013 he achieved Master’s Degree in “Military Sciences - Infantry from the Military Academy”. In addition, in 2015, Rodrigues achieved another Master’sDegree in Security and Defence - from the Instituto de Estudos Superiores Militares, currently designated by Instituto Universitário Militar (IUM).
    On what concerns his military career, after graduating the Academy, in 1998, he was posted to the nineteenth Infantry Regiment in Chaves. There, Rodrigues was assigned to be Platoon Commander. In 2003, he attended the Captain’s Promotion Course and was promoted to Captain and assigned to be a Company Commander. In 2006 he was assigned to be the Chief of Operations Information and Security cell of the Regiment. After that, in 2008, he attended the Major’s Promotion Course and, the year after, ended up being promoted to Major. Following on to 2012, he was assigned to attend the Portuguese Army Staff Course and the Joint Staff Course, being placed in the Land Forces Command, in Oeiras, and assigned to be a Staff Officer at the Training Branch. As for 2017, he was promoted to Lieutenant-cornel and from January, 2018, until the end of 2020, was assigned to be the Commander of the First PANDUR Mechanised Battalion. From the end of 2020 until this day, he is the PANDUR Mechanised Brigade Chief Operations Officer (G3 Chief Branch).
    During his duty, within the positions mentioned previously, he was on two missions abroad: Bosnia I Herzegovina, 2000, as Infantry Platoon Commander, and Afghanistan, 2011, as logistics Chief officer of the Portuguese Support Unit.

    Major General Ross Coffman is married to Jacqui Coffman, and together they have three daughters: Lindsey, Lauren, and Katelyn.
    Upon graduating from Centre College and completing the University of Kentucky's ROTC program, he was commissioned in to the Armor Corps.
    His company grade years were spent with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, and the NTC Operations Group.
    BG Coffman served as a Field Grade Officer in the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), the 1st Armored Division, the National Training Center, and twice with the 3rd Infantry Division.
    Prior to his current position, MG Coffman served as the Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver in the 1st Infantry Division with duty in Eastern Europe. He now serves as Director, Next Generation Combat Vehicle - Cross Functional Team (CFT).
    His civilian education includes a Bachelor degree from Centre College, an MBA from Embry Riddle University, and a Graduate Fellowship at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

    From 2017 to 2019, Mr. Barrett served as the Director for Materiel Systems Analysis in the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command's (CCDC) Data and Analysis Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. He assumed that responsibility when the Army Materiel Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA), the U.S. Army Materiel Command’s premier analytic organization, transitioned into the Army Futures Command and CCDC. Mr. Barrett led a team of more than 300 civilian and military analysts to complete operational performance and sustainment studies across the materiel lifecycle to inform critical acquisition and operational decisions.
    He also managed the Army's authoritative systems' characteristic and performance data, and a portfolio of more than 70 models and simulations to complete item, system, one on one, and few on few studies. From 2016 to 2017, he served as the Social Security Administration (SSA) Associate Commissioner for Information Technology Financial Management and Support. He directed the Agency’s national IT Capital Planning and Investment Process, managed a $1.2 Billion annual budget, and coordinated investment plans and reports with the White House’s Office of Management and Budget and Congressional Committees.
    Before transitioning to the SSA, Mr. Barrett served 27 years with the Department of the Army. He is a Distinguished Military Graduate from Rutgers University, received a Regular Army commission, and served for 12 years including deployments to Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Safe Removal, Sustain Liberty, and Visible Presence. Upon resigning his commission in 2000, Mr. Barrett accepted a position with the Army Evaluation Center of the Army Test and Evaluation Command, where he served in several leadership positions.
    Mr. Barrett has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2016. His educational achievements include a Master of Engineering degree in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Rutgers’s University. He is also a graduate of the AberdeenProving Ground Senior Leadership Cohort 6 and the Senior Executive Fellows, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Mr. Barrett has been a member of the Army Acquisition Corps since 2002.     A professional engineer and Technical Fellow at Leonardo, Guy has accumulated over 38 years of experience in the design and development of defence electronic systems and their integration within platform solutions, since joining what was Marconi Avionics in 1982.

    Having initially specialised in electro-optical control and sensor systems, he has been privileged to work on a wide variety of air and land programmes during their most exciting Concept and Development phases: from classified countermeasure systems on tracked vehicles to the C130 Gunship integration; from risk reduction on TRACER and FRES to the introduction of the Enforcer remote controlled weapon system and sight to the British Army.

    Guy is a long-standing supporter of dstl-sponsored Vehicle Systems Integration (VSI) research and has contributed to the development of the Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standards since 2009. During 2013 and 2015 Guy led the Leonardo (then Selex ES) contributions to the two LAVOSAR studies for EDA. Since 2016 Guy has supported the study and development of the MIPS Architecture Standard working within and in parallel to the dstl Icarus project.

In 2006 Jean Beugels started a new challenge at TenCate Advanced Armour, first as new business developer and then built and lead the anti-ballistic Aerospace business with mainly Helicopter and Aircraft OEMs. In de last 3 years he is Head of the TenCate Technical Center Europe for development of cutting edge ballistics solutions for all market segments.     Richard Gunters (1967) holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering with more than 25 years of experience in the personal protection market. After serving as the platoon commander during his military service, Gunters started working for the Netherlands MOD. During that period, he toured as a captain in Bosnia- Herzegovina from 1996-1997 (SFOR 1) and, upon his return, joined the R&D department where he focused on ballistic protection – and was directly involved in writing specifications for ballistic, protective equipment based on end-user requirements and studies conducted by TNO and the likes.

    In 2007, Gunters joined DSM as an Account Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), with an emphasis on the United Kingdom, Germany and Turkey. Since 2015, Gunters has lead the commercial and technical teams for both platform and personal protection for DSM Protective Materials in EMEA

    Outside of his professional endeavors, Gunters enjoys staying active by playing tennis and running. He’s also a season ticket holder for FC Utrecht on the Bunnik Side. If he’s not busy playing or watching sports, Gunters enjoys reading non-fiction on topics ranging from Russia and the Ottoman Empire to books by Anthony Beevor.

    Roger is an innovative entrepreneur with 45 years’ experience of building high-technology advanced materials/engineering organisations from single-man start-ups to operations with a global reach.     Professor Bryn James is a physicist. He has spent his career applying knowledge of physics in the field of protection and survivability, in a number of technology areas. He has spent much time investigating the interaction of externally applied forces with solid matter in the field of armour systems, contributing many papers to relevant International Symposia. He has also undertaken significant research and development of precise and accurate timing and frequency technology for defence systems. Bryn is a Senior Fellow in Dstl. He is the Technical Leader for armour research and development, the technical lead for Timing Systems and he is the Head of the Land Integrated Survivability Technology Exploitation Network (LISTEN). He initiated and led the Parsifal programme for operational support in armour and protection for Operation Telic and Operation Herrick. For this he was awarded a MOD Chief Scientific Adviser’s commendation.

    The ABBS Active Mine Protection System (AMPS™) package is a suite of three systems designed to fully protect the occupants of an armoured vehicle from all the secondary effects of an under-belly mine.

    • Floor Shock. An active system very rapidly removes the vehicle floor from under the seated occupant’s feet, and from under any loose objects on the floor. The floor re-sets to its original position automatically and does not require any maintenance afterwards apart from replacing the energetic cartridges in the actuators.

    • Belly Plate Deformation. A simple passive system using composite reinforcement of a steel belly plate has been developed to minimise the deformation that occurs directly over the mine location. As well as protecting the occupant’s legs by eliminating contact between the belly plate and the floor, this also enables a reduction in the depth of the space that is normally left open between the belly plate and the vehicle floor. Reducing this space claim has significant benefits in terms of vehicle overall height and weight. A 12kg test to AEP55 at 300mm standoff resulted in only 80mm deformation very locally in the belly plate with no deformation at the edges of the belly plate.

    • Global Acceleration. The ABBS VGAM™ (Vehicle Global Acceleration Mitigation) system has been fully proven by testing in the UK during 2017 and in August 2018 by a large-scale test in the USA. The system can completely eliminate Global Acceleration due to the mine blast. The immensely powerful patented, easily fitted, lightweight, Linear Rocket Motor (LRM™) countermeasures initiate in less than 3ms after the mine blast and can deliver nearly all their impulse in another 20 – 30ms to counteract the mine blast lifting forces and keep the vehicle on the ground. The system is being evaluated and developed to TRL6 under a CRADA with TARDEC.

    • New Development – Active Belly Plate System – A new active system designed to counteract the initial high peak of the mine blast force/time curve is being developed. It is anticipated that the system will enable a substantial reduction in belly plate weight which can translate into full 6kg underbelly protection for light commercial vehicles such as a Toyota Land Cruiser at a reasonable weight and cost without the need to use the Linear Rocket Motors to control Global Acceleration.

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.


    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.


    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.


    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
